About us
Belsem is an organisation that cares about mental health. We hope to facilitate an open and non-restrictive dialogue about what mental and emotional wellness means to you, as an individual.
There is an increasing need within the Diaspora for therapists who can practice outside the scope of whiteness. Belsem does not separate mental wellness from cultural wellness, and thus operates from a deep understanding of the cognitive and cultural dissonance that occurs within those of us impacted by immigration, forced displacement and violence. We see the models of care that stand today, shaped by oppressive and colonial structures that treat mental and emotional wellness as a guideline for conformity and assimilation, rather than true wellness.
Our goal is to provide good, effective and meaningful counselling for those that the current systems of care were not made to support. We understand that therapy alone cannot fix the issues faced by many today, however, we can stand with you and provide a helping hand as you navigate these challenges in your day to day.
